Mirrors can be found in every home, business, restaurant, night club and other public space, even in the car and handbag. They really are part of daily life. Let's have a closer look at the role of mirrors in Feng Shui.

Anything Seen in a Mirror is Symbolically Doubled
Mirrors reflect, and therefore double, whatever is in their view. Sounds simple, but look a little deeper into what it is the mirror is doubling. Mirrors which reflect the natural beauty of nature in the form of a pleasant landscape, healthy plants, or a birdbath filled with fresh water and enjoyed by happy birds; these things all bring beneficial energy ("chi") into a space.
How about a mirror reflecting garbage cans, clutter, broken appliances, dirty shoes, unpaid bills and unfinished tasks? In that case the mirror is "doubling the trouble". Some time and effort spent de-cluttering and getting down to those tasks will be greatly rewarding
Avoid Feng Shui mirror mistakes
Feng Shui advises against placing a mirror directly opposite a door or window. Doing so will have the effect of bouncing the helpful “chi” right back outside and away from one’s life. In the same way, having two mirrors facing each other will bounce energy back and forth, potentially creating a tense, frantic atmosphere. Removing those mirrors will encourage the energy, and opportunity, to flow into and circulate throughout the space.
Being surrounded by too many mirrors can make it hard to relax as every movement is amplified. Having mirrors in the bedroom, especially facing the bed, can disturb the energies when a person is at their most vulnerable – sleeping. If removing bedroom mirrors is not possible, consider installing a lightweight curtain which can be easily drawn across at night. A more peaceful sleep will be the reward.
Feng Shui works better as more attention is paid to placement. When utiliizing mirrors as helpful tools, take care to not reflect/double the following items.
- a toilet
- a staircase
- scary or violent images (for instance a movie poster for a scary movie)
- anything that could make a person feel sad ( better to get rid of that item anyway)
Correct Mirror Usage for the Most Beneficial Energy Flow
Mirrors can be used to great benefit in one’s home or business, but must be used correctly. Keep them clean and shiny and in good repair. That gorgeous and expensive mirror with “just one chip” is not doing anyone any favours. More than likely, one’s eye is drawn to that flaw every time. Avoid mosaic-style mirrors as they have the effect of “cutting us up” as we pass by. Placement is also important, don’t use as an every-day mirror one which cuts off the top of the head of any family member. The ideal mirror shows each family member from top to bottom, including the feet.
Take the opportunity to reflect scenes or items which bring joy and positive energy to the home. Here are some ideas to start with.

- favourite artworks
- certificates of appreciation, trophies
- items of value (the value could be personal, spiritual or monetary
